While I haven't tested with a VMware Shared Folder however my suggestion as a workaround would be try using mklink in an Administrator: Command Prompt to create a directory symbolic link on C: to the VMware Shared Folder. If I copy a file from the NAS to C: (to an area that requires Admin approval), the NAS share also shows up. Here's what the application sees after I do the file copy:Īs can be seen, the true SMB implementation doesn't even show up. Here's what one of the applications sees before I do the file copy: Further, sharing files over the network from the Mac opens up some potential security vulnerabilities (albeit minor) than using shared folders which only share with the VM. In fact, on the Windows side, the shared folders are just a network share. "Industry Standard" SMB has exactly the same problem. I personally do not use the VMware Shared Folders feature, just to many issues from the beginning and even thought improved over the years I prefer using Industry Standard Methods instead e.g SMB/CIFS, etc. Windows XP VM - Hardware Version 7 (this VM was originally used with Fusion 3 and I'm reluctant to upgrade) * File Open and File Save dialogs do not include Z: Clearly, copying the file changes the state of something which the windows applications are depending on. I also found that if I copy just one file (doesn't matter what file) from a shared folder to the C: drive and then start either application, they are able to access the shared folders.

I can access the shared folders from Windows Explorer.

I've never had this problem with the XP VM. The next time I went to use it, the applications can't access the shared folders*.

Mac network drive as administrator software#
I recently set up the Windows 7 VM, installed the watch software and the first time I used the software it worked. I have been using a Windows XP VM for some time without problems but want to Windows 7 as XP will be out of support soon. The main reason I run the VMs is because I have a couple of dive watches that only have (old) Windows software for downloading their data.
